Should I forget

Roadsinger

This is Yusuf's (Cat Stevens) new album, which is subtitled "To Warm You Through the Night".  It follows his successful and warmly received "comeback" album, "An Other Cup".  This album grew on me---I thought, upon first listening to Roadsinger, that An Other Cup, which I really like, was the better album.  But after listening to it several times, Roadsinger's beauty became very much apparent.  It's akin, I guess, to those other things which I need to contemplate on in quiet before fully understanding.  And a word which does come to mind to describe this album is "quiet".  Understandably and expectedly, Yusuf's spiritual commitment is reflected in his music, both in the melody and in the lyrics, although it is quite subtle in the latter.  But let's not forget the exquisite appeal of the instrumentals, particularly the guitars---this is, after all, the Cat, whose considerable musical talent was always a vehicle for his strong messages.

The album has 11 tracks.  I love them all, but I've got favorites, which would be "Welcome Home", "Thinking 'Bout You" (I love the vocals), "Be What You Must"---a reprise of "Sitting" in more ways than one, which includes children's vocal harmony and which still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it---and the title track, "Roadsinger".

Where do you go?  Oh, where do you go
When hearts are closed;
When a friend becomes a stranger,
Nobody wants to know?

Where do you go?  Oh, where do you go
To find happiness
In a world filled with hatred
And tears?
Where do you go?  Oh, where do you go
If no one cares;
And everybody's lost
Looking for theirs?
